George (Red) J. Ferree, 91, of Nineveh, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 16, 2018. He was born on September 29, 1926.
George was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II. He then attended Purdue University where he studied mechanical engineering.
George married his sweetheart, Helen, on November 11, 1948. This November they would have celebrated 70 years of marriage. George and Helen enjoyed traveling and taking yearly vacations together.
George loved sports and was very active his whole life. He lettered in varsity track and cross country at Tech High School in Indianapolis. He boxed, and played baseball and softball. George played basketball until his late 60’s. He went to most of his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He loved to fish, especially with his grandson, John. George was also a big IU, Purdue, and Colts fan.
George was employed as a supervisor at Western Electric for 36 years. He owned and operated Bishop Cleaners off of Thompson Road in Indianapolis for 10 years. He dry cleaned for several of the big hotels downtown and met many famous people through cleaning their clothes. George had to stay busy, so he then worked at Walmart in Franklin for 19 years, enjoying talking to all of the customers.
George’s family was his pride and joy. There wasn’t anything he enjoyed more than spending time with his family. George was a very humble, generous, kind man and anyone he met adored him and became his friend. George always had a smile on his face and was loved deeply by his family.
George’s legacy continues with his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Helen; son: Mike (Amy) Ferree; daughter: Sandy (John) Keesling; granddaughters: Brooke (Luke) McFann, Brandy Ferree, and Chrissy Ferree; grandsons: John Keesling, Jesse Keesling, Michael (Merriam) Ferree, and Tommy Ferree; great-grandchildren: Brittany, Levi, Briley, Jordan, Adalyn, Courtny, Rylyn, James, Garren, and Caylyn.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Versel Ferree and baby son, Tommy Joe.
There will be a private graveside burial. Arrangements entrusted to Jessen Funeral Home, Trafalgar Chapel.
